I currently serve as the inaugural vice chancellor of NYU Shanghai and an independent director of Infosys Ltd. I have previously served as a Supreme Court law clerk, a practicing tax lawyer, a professor of law and public policy, the dean of the University of Michigan Law School, the president of Cornell University, a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the chair of the board of Internet2, and the founding dean of the Peking University School of Transnational Law.
During my career, I have been given the opportunity to write and speak about a broad range of issues that animate life in the twenty-first century. I believe that education, technology, and the rule of law are all vital forces in the development of a world where people from different cultural backgrounds join their talents to improve the human condition. And I believe that great institutions can foster that development in ways that individuals cannot do on their own. This website affords me a way to collect my ideas in one place and share them with you.
